A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is built to handle thousands of switching operations, but its internal components — vacuum interrupters, contacts, springs, and coils — wear down over time. Catching the early warning signs before a failure can save you from unplanned downtime and costly emergency repairs.
1. Rising Contact Resistance
A gradual increase in contact resistance, picked up during routine testing, usually points to erosion of the vacuum interrupter's internal contacts. Left unchecked, this leads to overheating at the breaker terminals and, eventually, contact welding during a fault interruption.
2. Vacuum Interrupter Leakage
Every vacuum interrupter is sealed to maintain a high vacuum level. A loss of vacuum — detectable through a vacuum integrity test or a visible "sparkover" during operation — means the interrupter can no longer safely quench an arc and must be replaced immediately.
3. Slow or Inconsistent Operating Times
If closing or tripping times drift outside the manufacturer's specified range, the culprit is often a weakening spring charging motor, a sticking operating mechanism, or worn trip/closing coils. Inconsistent timing between the three poles is an especially strong indicator that spares are due.
4. Excessive Wear on Auxiliary Switches and Coils
Auxiliary switches, undervoltage release coils, and shunt trip coils see constant mechanical cycling. Chattering contacts, intermittent signalling, or a coil that no longer holds resistance within spec are all signs these components have reached end of life.
5. Visible Corrosion or Mechanical Play
During a physical inspection, look for corrosion on bushings and secondary disconnects, and check for play in the racking mechanism or door interlocks. Mechanical looseness here often accelerates wear on every other component in the breaker.
