Why a Breaker Failing to Trip Is Serious
A breaker that does not open when commanded cannot clear a fault, so upstream protection has to do the job instead. That makes a failure-to-trip one of the most important faults to diagnose quickly and correctly.
Start With the Trip Circuit
- Control supply - confirm the DC or AC control voltage is present at the trip coil terminals when the trip command is given.
- Wiring and terminals - loose, corroded, or broken connections in the trip path are a common cause, especially in older panels.
- Protection relay output - check the relay is actually issuing a trip contact closure and that the contact is healthy.
- Auxiliary switch contacts - the trip circuit usually passes through breaker auxiliary contacts, and a worn or misadjusted contact can open the path.
Then Check the Trip Coil and Mechanism
A failed or weak trip coil may draw no current or produce too little force to release the latch. Measure coil resistance and compare with the nameplate or datasheet value. If the coil is healthy, the mechanism itself may be stiff, dry, or dirty enough that the latch does not release, which points to lubrication and mechanical inspection rather than electrical repair.
Prevention
