VCB Maintenance Best Practices

Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCBs) are known for their long service life and low maintenance requirements compared to older oil or air-blast breakers โ€” but "low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance." A structured maintenance program is essential to catch developing faults before they cause an unplanned outage.

Why VCB Maintenance Matters

A VCB interrupts current inside a sealed vacuum interrupter (VI), which eliminates the need for insulating oil or gas replenishment. However, the mechanical operating mechanism, contact wear, and vacuum integrity of the interrupter still need periodic verification โ€” especially after a high fault-current interruption.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

  • Annually (or per manufacturer schedule): Visual inspection of the breaker, cubicle, and cable connections for signs of overheating, tracking, or corrosion.
  • Every 1-3 years: Contact resistance (micro-ohm) testing across each phase to detect contact wear or poor connections.
  • Every 3-5 years or after major fault interruption: Vacuum integrity test (using a high-voltage AC or DC withstand test across the open contacts) to confirm the vacuum interrupter hasn't lost its dielectric strength.
  • Periodically: Mechanism timing test (contact travel, closing/opening speed) to confirm the spring-operated or motor-wound mechanism is within manufacturer tolerance.
  • As needed: Lubrication of moving mechanical parts per the OEM manual โ€” over-lubrication can attract dust and cause its own problems, so always follow the specified grease type and quantity.

Common Warning Signs

Watch for: unusually slow or fast operating times compared to baseline, visible arcing marks near bushings, discoloration on cable lugs (a sign of a loose or high-resistance connection), and any unusual noise during closing/opening operations.
