What an RMU Is
A ring main unit (RMU) is a compact, factory-assembled set of medium-voltage switchgear designed to connect into a ring-type distribution network, where power can reach any given point from two directions. If a cable section fails, the ring can be reconfigured to restore supply to affected customers through the alternate path, which is why this arrangement is common in urban and industrial distribution.
Typical Configuration
A standard RMU is often described as a combination of switching functions in a single enclosure: two ring switches (load break switches or breakers) that connect the incoming and outgoing ring cable sections, and one tee-off protecting a distribution transformer — usually via a fuse switch or a circuit breaker with protection relay. Many modern RMUs are gas-insulated and sealed, which keeps them compact and largely unaffected by moisture, dust, or pollution in the surrounding environment.
Key Components Inside
- Load break switches for isolating and switching normal load current on the ring.
- Earthing switches to safely ground a section for maintenance.
- Fuse or circuit breaker tee-off for transformer protection.
- Interlocks to prevent unsafe switching sequences, such as closing an earthing switch onto a live section.
- Operating mechanisms, which may be manual, motorised, or spring-charged depending on the model and remote-control requirements.
Maintenance Considerations
Because many RMUs are sealed for life or use sealed gas compartments, the internal components are often not user-serviceable in the field, and maintenance focuses on the operating mechanisms, external connections, and protection or control accessories such as motors, coils, and auxiliary switches. Matching the exact spare to the exact RMU model matters, since mechanism dimensions and electrical ratings are model-specific.
