Three Realistic Options
- Repair and keep maintaining - sensible while parts are available and the breaker remains reliable.
- Retrofit - fit a modern breaker element or vacuum interrupter into the existing panel and cubicle.
- Replace the switchgear - install new panels, usually when the whole assembly is at end of life or ratings are no longer adequate.
Factors That Decide It
- Spare part availability - if critical spares are obsolete or have very long lead times, ongoing repair becomes risky. See our note on critical spares planning.
- Fault level - if the network fault current has grown beyond the breaker rating, a like-for-like repair does not fix the underlying issue.
- Condition of the panel - busbars, insulation, and enclosure condition matter as much as the breaker.
- Downtime available - retrofits are usually much quicker than full replacement.
- Safety features - modern designs offer better interlocking and arc-containment options.
