Circuit breakers are the backbone of any electrical protection system, and two of the most commonly confused types are the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) and the Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB). While both protect circuits from overcurrent and short-circuit faults, they're designed for very different scales of application.
What is an MCB?
An MCB is a compact, low-current protection device typically rated up to 63A to 125A depending on the standard, and used at voltages up to 415V. MCBs are the standard choice for residential distribution boards, small commercial panels, and lighting/socket circuits. Their tripping characteristics (Type B, C, and D) are fixed at the time of manufacture and cannot be adjusted in the field.
What is an MCCB?
An MCCB is built for higher current ratings — generally from 100A up to 2500A or more — and is used to protect larger distribution circuits, industrial motors, and main incoming supplies. Unlike MCBs, most MCCBs allow the trip settings (thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit thresholds) to be adjusted, giving engineers flexibility to fine-tune protection coordination across a facility.

Which One Do You Need?
If you're protecting a lighting circuit, a socket outlet, or a small appliance feed, an MCB is almost always the right — and most economical — choice. For protecting a factory's main incoming supply, a large motor, or a sub-distribution board feeding multiple downstream circuits, an MCCB with adjustable trip settings gives you the coordination flexibility needed to avoid nuisance tripping while still protecting equipment.
