Why Earthing Method Matters

The way a system neutral is connected to earth changes how much current flows in an earth fault and how easy the fault is to detect. See our overview of earthing and grounding basics.

Common Neutral Arrangements

  • Solidly earthed - very high earth fault current, easy to detect, but more damaging.
  • Resistance or reactance earthed - limits the fault current to a controlled value, common in industrial distribution.
  • Isolated (unearthed) - very low fault current, allows continued operation with one earth fault, but needs alert detection.
  • Resonant (Petersen coil) earthed - tunes out capacitive fault current in networks with long cables or lines.

How Earth Faults Are Detected

  • Residual connection of the three phase CTs, summing current to find imbalance.
  • Core-balance CT around all three phase conductors of a cable, giving sensitive detection of small earth currents.
  • Directional earth fault relays where fault current can flow in either direction.
