Anti-Pumping Relay in a VCB Control Circuit Explained

What Pumping Means

Imagine a breaker closes onto a fault and protection immediately trips it. If the operator or control system is still holding the close command, a simple control circuit would try to close the breaker again, and it would trip again, repeating the cycle. This repeated close-trip cycling is called pumping, and it can damage the breaker and the network.

How Anti-Pumping Works

An anti-pumping function makes the closing command a one-shot action. After a close-then-trip sequence, the close circuit is locked out until the close command is fully released and then given again. It is commonly implemented with an auxiliary relay, often called a 52Y relay in ANSI terminology, wired into the control scheme, and many modern breaker mechanisms and protection relays include the function in their logic.

Why It Matters for Maintenance

  • If the anti-pumping relay or its contacts fail, the breaker may not close even though everything else looks correct.
  • If the function is missing or bypassed, a held close command onto a fault can cause repeated operations.
